Toppers, pads and protectors each do a different job.
- Toppers change how the bed feels. Memory foam softens a firm mattress; latex adds bounce and tends to sleep cooler; fibre and down-alternative toppers add plushness. Thicker toppers make a bigger difference.
- Pads are thinner layers that add a little comfort and protection.
- Protectors guard against spills, sweat and allergens. Waterproof protectors are essential for kids' beds and help keep mattress warranties valid.
- Encasements zip around the whole mattress and are used to trap bed bugs and dust mites.
A topper can make a firm or slightly worn mattress more comfortable, but it cannot fix a sagging one. If the mattress dips, the topper will dip too. For cooling, look for gel-infused or open-cell foam, latex, or breathable covers. See mattresses by sleep need if your mattress needs replacing instead.
