Hybrid, Latex & Innerspring Mattresses Buying Guide

These mattresses all have a bouncier, more responsive feel than all-foam beds, but they are built differently.

  • Innerspring mattresses use coils with a thin comfort layer. They are breathable and often affordable; pocketed coils reduce motion transfer compared with connected coils.
  • Hybrids combine a pocketed coil base with thicker foam or latex comfort layers, aiming for pressure relief plus support and airflow.
  • Latex is buoyant and durable. Natural latex (Dunlop or Talalay) costs more than synthetic or blended latex; check certifications if natural or organic materials matter to you.
  • Pillow tops add a sewn-on comfort layer that can compress over time.

Hybrids and latex mattresses are heavy, so check your bed frame's weight rating and slat spacing. Some innerspring mattresses are designed to sit on a box spring or foundation; check the warranty for support requirements. For all-foam options, see memory foam mattresses.
