Crib & Kids Mattresses Buying Guide

For babies, safety comes first. The American Academy of Pediatrics advises a firm, flat sleep surface with a fitted sheet and nothing else in the crib: no pillows, bumpers or soft toys.

  • Fit. A full-size crib mattress must fit snugly. If you can fit more than two fingers between the mattress and the crib side, it is too small.
  • Firmness. Infant mattresses should be firm; dual-sided crib mattresses have a firm infant side and a softer toddler side.
  • Bassinets and play yards. Use only the mattress made for that product or one the manufacturer approves. Never add an extra pad on top of a play yard mattress.
  • Certifications. Crib mattresses sold in the US must meet CPSC safety rules. Labels such as GREENGUARD Gold or GOTS relate to emissions and organic materials.
  • Cleaning. A waterproof cover or removable, washable cover makes accidents easier to deal with.

For older children, a medium-firm twin mattress with good edge support works well. Bunk beds have a maximum mattress thickness for the top bunk so the guardrail stays effective; check the bed's label.
