Air Mattresses Buying Guide

Air mattresses fall into two groups: raised guest beds for indoor use and low-profile mattresses for camping.

  • Pump. Built-in electric pumps inflate quickly at home. For camping, choose a rechargeable or battery pump, or a mattress with a foot pump.
  • Height. Raised (double-height) models are easier to get in and out of; low models are more stable and pack smaller.
  • Construction. Internal coil or beam chambers keep the surface flatter. A flocked top stops sheets sliding.
  • Size. Check the inflated dimensions against your room or tent; queen air beds are close to a standard queen.

New air mattresses often seem to lose air in the first few nights because the material stretches. Top it up before deciding it leaks. If it does leak, find the hole with soapy water and patch it with the included repair kit. Store it dry and loosely folded, away from sharp objects.
